BEFORE:

Street banners…

These beautiful banners hung on Dunbar Street from 2008 – 2010. They were the first banners produced by the Dunbar Village Business Improvement Association.

AFTER:

… Courier bags!

The DVBIA donated 150 left-over street banners to the Dunbar Residents’ Association Salmonberry Days team, for us to use in a community project.

Own a piece of Dunbar history

Zero Waste Vancouver helped by developing a pattern to produce courier bags from the banners. The pattern uses every single bit of the banner except the plastic edging and the grommets.

Community volunteers sewed up several dozen bags like this one – sleek, sturdy, and attractive!

DIMENSIONS:

Width: 13”
Height: 15”

YOU can own a bag like this! Or give one to a friend! We are holding an on-line auction to raise funds for  projects in the community.

Support Salmonberry Days ~ Make a bid on a bag!

Send your bid and your contact information. We will contact you if yours is a winning bid.

We’ll take this opportunity to toot the horn for our local H.R. MacMillan Space Centre at Kitsilano Point. Saturday is International Astronomy Day

Recollections of last night’s Dunbar’s Night Sky

First we offer a thousand thank-yous to the tireless Craig McCaw and his fellow volunteers from the HR MacMillan Planetarium and the Royal Astronomical Society.

Now here’s a report on our star gazing event from Dunbar’s very own Terry Slack.

… The heavens with their planets , stars and moons were wonderful ! The moon with its billion of years old impact craters and great dry deserts , kids in pajamas were lifted up, or climbed a ladder to have a peek through the Telescope’s eye pieces . The U. S. A. moon landing area close to a long spine of Mountains and sparkling rimed impact craters , Wow we slipped the bounds of our earth and watched as the Moon Titan moved ever so slowly around its planet . Saturn with its hallow like rings seen on their edge, was just one highlight of the evening ! The lineups were long at the big Telescopes , but well worth the wait as everyone was friendly and chatting to each other about the night sky ! Did all the Sky Gazers have a good time , Yes Yes we Did, when can we do it again ?Thanks allot to the Volunteers who helped make this happen !

Terry ….

Our children’s use of online communication and social media is exploding. How do we stay ahead of this technology curve and guide our children safely and wisely through a time of unprecedented change? When is it appropriate to allow our kids on social networking sites like Facebook? How do we protect them from inappropriate content on sites like YouTube?
How do we keep them from being exploited by the information and individuals they encounter on the Internet?

Parenting in a Cyber-Age  will explore the many parenting challenges presented by the Internet age. This presentation aims to help parents acquire the tools to deal with these challenges with a particular focus on Internet literacy and safety information. Presented by BC’s Safe Online Outreach Society (SOLOS) this presentation will also provide timely information on topics including:
» Web 101
» Parents as “cyber-tourists”; youth as “cyber residents”
» Emerging trends in online youth culture
» High risk activities online
» The nature of sexual exploitation in cyberspace
» Internet safety tips and resources

Public is welcome. Please contact shaben@telus.net for further information or to reserve seats.
