Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club Facts

The sport of Lawn Bowling in our area is located just off 31st Avenue, and West of the Dunbar Community Centre and tennis courts. There is a fully serviced clubhouse with a kitchen, washroom facilities and a large social/activity area. There are eight greens with large overhead lights for evening play.

During the lawn bowling season, the Club has several social functions, tourneys, and in the off season, there are bridge sessions.

The Lawn Bowling season is from May to mid-September. The Club has Ladies’, Men’s, mixed and inter-club tourneys. Lawn bowling coaching is provided by club members. There is free use of club bowls initially, and it is possible to buy used bowls. White clothing is optional except for special occasions and Sunday afternoon play when whites or cream coloured clothing is preferred. Shoes should be smooth-soled and flat.

Items used in lawn bowling are:
- a jack – a round white ball that is the target.
- a set of bowls (4) which come in various sizes.

The game of lawn bowling involves an offensive and defensive strategy to play the game, and has the added challenge that the target (or jack) is moveable anywhere on the green. The object of the game is to try and roll the bowl as close to the jack. The bowl one actually bowls with is not completely spherical, allowing it to curve toward the jack as momentum is lost. The bowl curves either way depending on how it is held during delivery. The bowls come in various sizes to best fit a player’s hand. The object of the game is to try and roll the bowl as close to the jack.

Memorial Park West
Dunbar’s busiest park is popular for a wide range of sports — everything from soccer and baseball to tennis and lawn bowling. The park is home to the Dunbar Lawn Bowling Club and site of the Dunbar Community Centre. The Community Centre houses a fitness centre, racquet courts, a gymnasium and activity rooms. A great park for kids , Memorial also has a children’s play area and a paved path for strollers, tricycles or
wheelchairs.

Musqueam Park
Musqueam, the area’s largest park, is lushly treed and developed for field sports such as soccer. A trail running through the park links hikers and riders from the Fraser River trail with the trails of Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

The park is located at the western tip of Deering Island. This is a park of 0.60 ha at the south foot of Carrington St. (Fraser River) in Southlands. This is a pleasant addition to the Celtic Greenway that runs along the river edge at Point Grey G & CC. On the site is a bench shelter were even in the winter along with a thermos of a hot drink, one can watch the setting sun in the south-west in quiet solitude.

For the past two years the DRA has worked with our neighbours in Southland and with other community groups to repair the dyke and replant native vegetation on the lovely waterfront trail on the Fraser River side of the Point Grey Golf and Country Club.

The City of Vancouver, the PGG&CC, the UEL Equestrian trail Riders and many other volunteers raised money and donated time to complete the necessary repairs.

Camosun Bog Interpretive Trail

Camosum Bog Dunbar residents are indeed fortunate to have a relic of the last ice age on our doorstep. Camosun Bog began to deteriorate 60 years ago as water levels started to fall. The Camosun Bog Restoration Group (CBRG) was set up in 1995 to coordinate efforts to restore the bog ecosystem. Working with the Pacific Spirit Park Society and GVRD Park staff, volunteers have been monitoring, carrying out remedial work, and looking at long term restoration. One of the main efforts has been to remove invading non-bog species such as hemlock and birch trees and hardback.
View Point The Camosun Bog Restoration Group acquired funding to build an extension of the wooden boardwalk and interpretive signs explaining the work that has been carried out by many Dunbar volunteers including students from Lord Byng High School. The boardwalk trail allows visitors to see more of the restored areas up close without harming the delicate plant communities there.
