The late June Binkert produced four lists of distinctive Dunbar houses organized into short walking tours. Read June’s notes as you view the houses from the street. You can either download the Walks from the list below or pick up copies from the Dunbar Branch Library.

What are Salmonberry Days?

Every year since 1998, Dunbar has celebrated spring in a unique way: we meet up for walks and talks to learn about our neighbourhood, its history and its ecology. Tree Walks

From our refresher course each May, we…

  • meet neighbours and old friends, and toegther get out to walk again the trails of Pacific Spirit Park.
  • learn about its forest habitat: its birds, its trees, its undergrowth, its streams, its history…
  • get a sense of the amazing geological history of the land that lies beneath Dunbar
  • learn about the configuration of the stars and planets that can be seen in the Dunbar night skies.
  • learn about the streetscape trees that make Dunbar so uniquely pleasant.
  • learn the history of those who settled Dunbar over a hundred years ago, where/how they built their houses, where they shopped, how they traveled.
  • learn from Vancouver City crews about Vancouver’s infrastrucure: the water system, the electrical system and the city sewer System.
  • trip on a heritage BC Bus to visit the edges of Dunbar to see places we didn’t know existed.

Salmonberry Days is a great start to the spring. It brings us out of our houses and cars and takes us for walks through Dunbar’s parks, streets and lanes.

Bird Walks

Walk with the bird experts along the Fraser River or through Pacific Spirit Park to really see the variety of birds in our side of Vancouver. Listen to our guides give explanations and stories of the local bird life.

This Green Heron, for example, was one of two Green Herons and was dramatically perched so near our gathering spot. It was a fabulous start for the Salmonberry Days bird watchers with two hours of walking along the Fraser and viewing the richness of our wildlife.
