JULY 30 UPDATE

At the June 26, 2008 community meeting to discuss development of the Operations Management Plan (OMP) for the “Dunbar Apartments,” a list of OMP related issues was generated. It was agreed to schedule a series of community meetings, beginning in the fall, to review the issues and gather additional feedback for the OMP. Each meeting would address particular sections of the OMP.

Please see Dunbar Street Apartments – Community Concerns Raised and Draft OMP Review Meeting Schedule prepared by the project facilitator, Raymond Penner, for details.

The first of these meetings is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 11, 2008, time and place to be announced. This meeting will address the OMP sections regarding Tenancy (who will live here), Client Selection Process and Client Operating Rules and Regulations.

Hi?Dunbar Stuart Lake Fraser River??Sockeye lovers!??

Just an update on the progress of this once great run of Fraser River Sockeye. I will slip on my underwater Sockeye glasses and here we go!

The first Stuart Lake Sockeye Leaders moved into English Bay and off the Middle Arm on the 29th of June and are now waiting for the rest of this year’s small run of fish to arrive. The Sockeye Leaders are very nervous as the strong water smells of home are all around them. Near the North Arm and Middle Arm, tides move the Sockeye back and forth in the river Plume. The fish circle and wait for the right time to enter. The big flood tides and the rising canoe moon of July 3rd and 4th move the Sockeye ever closer to the mouth of the river. The Stuart Sockeye staging in English Bay and along Bowen Island also move closer to the smells of fresh water in the North and Middle Arms.

The short waiting time in brackish water is now  over and on the low water slack tide, the Stuart Lake run of Fraser Sockeye begin their river migration, bucking head on to an outgoing or ebbing tide. With their direction finders still turned on, they follow the Sockeye Leaders  past bridges and under log booms. There are no nets, it’ a clear river path by Hope and through the lower Fraser Canyon.

The Stuart Sockeye are staging  below Hells Gate today, July the 10th, and are slowly moving through the fish ladders. The estimated run size today is around 25 to 35 thousand Sockeye; none have arrived in Stuart Lake today, but they are swimming home as fast as they can.
