The October issue of the DRA Newsletter has FOURTEEN pages of information and it’s all about Dunbar. You can download it in a few moments and then start catching up on Dunbar immediately.

Hi

Many years ago I had the homeowners job of digging up the roof drainage system around my 1930ies home in South West Dunbar . Low and behold when digging in the Summer of course, I found a great Roof Runoff System to ground and rock pit that had only a couple of broken clay tiles that I replaced with the same . What I did notice was that my house was  in a location of a very large geological , Glacier deposit clay, sand zone, that had wonderful natural soil drainages if you looked for them .

Then why in my community do I see contractors ripping out the Working Well “if maintained” old House perimeter clay Tile  systems, for a new system that holds back roof drainage water and in the ends sends it all to be so called TREATED at the Iona Island Primary Sewage and Waste Water Plant Treatment Plant in Richmond B. C.  ? ?

The Glacier Deposited sub soils under my house and thousands of others built on the Vancouver Vashon Glacier Till compressed Mud  and loose  sand Zone, has a well kept drainage secret, that can save the owner of a  old  Home  tens of thousands of dollars and also help save Our wild Fraser River Salmon !

SO Terry, what’s the natural Wild Salmon Saving Secret that the Glaciers helped created for all of us to use and help us save a big hunks of Drain replacement money  ? ?

My gosh it is so so simple , my old clay tile, Wild salmon Saving ,  Natural roof water house drains,  sit on top of about 8 inches of impermeable, compressed Glacier deposited grey clays and busting through the clay barrier about 10 feet  from the house into the sand layer underneath, on each drainage tile line and I did it, has worked well  for me for over 40 years !

If your house is of the 1900 to 1930 ies there is probably no drain tile around the foundation , just a hole busted through the compressed clay layer and clean permeable drainage rock placed on top of each  roof drain downpipe .

Happy Digging , save lots of Money and the bonus is helping to save our Wild Fraser River Salmon !

As mentioned in http://dunbar-vancouver.org/archives/585 this site has changed.

What’s changed? Well, all the old DRA postings are still on the site but you might have noticed that the packaging is slightly different.  We’re now using WordPress, a change that will make it easier for you to navigate our site & easier for our staff to maintain, update and add new features to our site.  For example, we’ve already used a new feature to go through our archives and correct the changed or broken links.

We’ve also thrown away the directory /DRANews and rooted everything in the top directory because the old and new systems URLs would have conflicted.

So what has REALLY changed?

  • There’s a new linkage convention! In simpler words, that’s the naming mechanism behind the name of the item.
  • If you had a bookmark for an item on the old system, you will have to locate the item and re-bookmark it.
  • If you came here from a search engine, the search engine may still have the old linkage but,  in time, all web spiders will visit our site and correct the information. albeit gradually.
  • If you were using RSS to link to our site, you’ll have to resubscribe using http://dunbar-vancouver.org/feed

This is a two year old item that we’ve resurrected because we FINALLY have our Events Calendar.

With our new website we’d like to make it even more current and of value to the neighbourhood by hosting a monthly Dunbar Events Item on our site.

So email your Dunbar Events to Events@dunbar-vancouver.org with a time/date, location and a small precis, and we’ll include it on our web site. Please try for family-type events around Dunbar. We’re looking for events that benefit Dunbar and help create more of Dunbar feeling of good will… throughout the year!

What do we have in mind?

  • Craft sales
  • Christmas events
  • Dunbar Garden Club
  • Dunbar Lawnbowling Club
  • Church Sales
  • Salmonberry Days
  • Community Centre events
  • Library events
  • Little League
  • Soccer
  • Plant Sales

No garage sales. We wouldn’t have the time to keep up to date.

We do have to say Postings must meet the approval of the DRA Board, or their designate.

You may notice slight differences with our website. The old items should still be in the system but you’ll notice there are new features.

If you bookmarked an old address in the old system, you will have to bookmark it again as directories changed.

  • We have an Events Calendar prominently displayed so, at a glance, you can see what’s coming up. So with this we can announce again that we welcome announcements of Dunbar Events, big and small. Email Events@dunbar-vancouver.org.
  • Across the very top are the Titles of descriptive blurbs that used to be in the right Sidebar. Easier to navigate to and it frees up “real estate” in the sidebar!
  • A Search box so you can search our website and zero right in on a topic.
  • Categories can contain one or more sub-categories, as you will notice in the sidebar.
  • The monthly Archives are visible.
  • Tags are the newest feature. Every posted item can have a blurb, picked at our discretion, that sums up the item. In the sidebar is a “Tags Cloud” that shows the frequency of the tag. As these tags are handpicked, they will be slowly adjusted in the future. Just let your mouse float over the Cloud, have a look at the separate tags and click the one you’re interested in.
  • A Weather Report has been added to the Sidebar. True that we can look out the window for the weather but there is a 5 day forecast. Our distant readers can see at a glance our Dunbar weather.

Having done this switch-over we will be looking at adding other features perhaps even updating the look of our site so we can display more material onscreen.

Email webmaster@dunbar-vancouver.org if you have a comment or see errors. There are still things to do… and undo.
