Hi
Many years ago I had the homeowners job of digging up the roof drainage system around my 1930ies home in South West Dunbar . Low and behold when digging in the Summer of course, I found a great Roof Runoff System to ground and rock pit that had only a couple of broken clay tiles that I replaced with the same . What I did notice was that my house was in a location of a very large geological , Glacier deposit clay, sand zone, that had wonderful natural soil drainages if you looked for them .
Then why in my community do I see contractors ripping out the Working Well “if maintained” old House perimeter clay Tile systems, for a new system that holds back roof drainage water and in the ends sends it all to be so called TREATED at the Iona Island Primary Sewage and Waste Water Plant Treatment Plant in Richmond B. C. ? ?
The Glacier Deposited sub soils under my house and thousands of others built on the Vancouver Vashon Glacier Till compressed Mud and loose sand Zone, has a well kept drainage secret, that can save the owner of a old Home tens of thousands of dollars and also help save Our wild Fraser River Salmon !
SO Terry, what’s the natural Wild Salmon Saving Secret that the Glaciers helped created for all of us to use and help us save a big hunks of Drain replacement money ? ?
My gosh it is so so simple , my old clay tile, Wild salmon Saving , Natural roof water house drains, sit on top of about 8 inches of impermeable, compressed Glacier deposited grey clays and busting through the clay barrier about 10 feet from the house into the sand layer underneath, on each drainage tile line and I did it, has worked well for me for over 40 years !
If your house is of the 1900 to 1930 ies there is probably no drain tile around the foundation , just a hole busted through the compressed clay layer and clean permeable drainage rock placed on top of each roof drain downpipe .
Happy Digging , save lots of Money and the bonus is helping to save our Wild Fraser River Salmon !
